چکیده

Beach–dune system morphodynamics is probably one of the most classical coastal engineering problems. While topic has been studied extensively and literature plentiful considerable research contributions, from authors’ knowledge subject still challenging for environmental sciences. As a part Special Issue entitled “Beach–dune morphodynamics” this Journal, present paper reviews traditional issues design advances building bridges between potential risks adaptation measures. The benefits nature-based hybrid solutions need multidisciplinary studies approaches to promote sustainable resilient conservation environment are emphasized. Considering importance complexity subject, work cannot be fully complete. It limited providing general overview outlining some important directions intending serve as springboard further in field beach–dune morphodynamics.

Simulating Decadal Coastal Morphodynamics

Coastal geomorphic systems provide many services of key importance to humankind, including protection from flood and erosion hazards, diverse habitats and amenity values (Agardy et al., 2005; Jones et al., 2011). However, these systems are widely undergoing degradation that can be substantially attributed to the cumulative direct and indirect effects of human interference. Declining sediment in...

Swash-zone morphodynamics

Hydrodynamic forcing with respect to sediment transport and morphologic change, paying particular attention to relevant swash asymmetries, is reviewed. The hydrodynamics are categorized into their individual effects: highand lowfrequency motions, bores and turbulence, in/exfiltration, shear stresses and friction coefficients. Individual effects are then related to their potential for driving or...

Ripple Morphodynamics in Oscillatory Flows

The long-term goal of our research is to improve our understanding of ripple morphodynamics in wave-current, boundary-layer flows. Our main focus is on the study of sediment transport in oscillatory boundary layers in the presence of unidirectional currents and the associated bed morphology (i.e. 2D and 3D ripples). We hope to improve currently available bed state prediction tools. To this end,...

Intercellular mechanotransduction during multicellular morphodynamics.

Multicellular structures are held together by cell adhesions. Forces that act upon these adhesions play an integral role in dynamically re-shaping multicellular structures during development and disease. Here, we describe different modes by which mechanical forces are transduced in a multicellular context: (i) indirect mechanosensing through compliant substratum, (ii) cytoskeletal 'tug-of-war' ...

Advances in Morphodynamics of Coasts and Lagoons

Coastal evolution due to natural and human-induced causes or factors can be rather variable on quite different temporal and/or spatial scales. Our capability to understand and especially predict this variability on the longer time scales is still limited. This can lead to misinterpretation of coastal change information, which hampers informed decision-making and the subsequent functional design...
